Solitary Practice

Solitary practice is when a witch practices witchcraft without a coven or group, but on their own.

Why would one want to do so?

There are many reasons why one may want or need to practice solitary including...

1. They have to because they are unable to find a suitable group to work with.

Either because of location, or just a lack of other witches, or others who practice in a similar way. They may wish to be a part of groups but are unable to.

2. They prefer to work alone.

They may be uncomfortable in a group. They may just view it as a personal experience and prefer to keep it private. Maybe they had prior bad experiences with groups and just now prefer to be alone.

3. They might be in the broomcloset and working with a group could risk inviting questions.

Whatever the reason, choosing a solitary path is just as valid and enriching for a witch.

I've been solitary my entire time as a witch and enjoy it. I like practicing how I want without any outside opinions on something so private and personal to me.

There are some challenges that come from solitary practice though.

1. Learning

Books are great! I love books. But they lack hands-on teaching and being able to actually see. Some people are better at learning by reading and just going with their instincts piecing everything together. But for others that can be a real challenge.

Luckily there is youtube! When I first began it was before youtube and let me say it is a major difference! Listening to someone discuss magick, spells, rituals is so much more natural for me.

There is the issue of getting very very bad information but honestly, that is no different than in person either. Some people/groups have very poor information, misinformation, or just bad advice.

The internet at least gives you a huge pool of information from all over the world right at your fingertips!

2. Lack of community

For some people, this won't really be an issue. You may even know other witches in your life like family/friends and still practice solitary. But for others, it can be difficult to feel like you are all alone.

The internet wins again! There is a plethora of online groups and forums out there to meet like-minded witches, discuss magick and witchcraft, and make friends!

3. Stagnation and lack of motivation

Sometimes it can be difficult to stick with something when you are in your own little bubble. So without anyone else to encourage, remind, inspire you it can be difficult sometimes to stick with something or feel motivated. Maybe a sabbat rolls around and you forgot and are unsure of what to do or feel it isn't worth the effort just for yourself.

This will be different for everyone.

The key is not to let yourself get trapped in that bubble. Always explore new ideas. Put in the effort. Remind yourself why you are doing it and most of all enjoy what you do!
