Dianic Witchcraft

I am a priestess of the Goddess, a daughter of the earth, sister of the moon and a keeper of the mystery.
I am a WOMAN, a feminist and a tree hugger.
I am reclaiming the Goddess, and women’s spirituality.
I honor the sacred feminine.
And see the Goddess in the face of every woman.

What is Dianic witchcraft?

Simply put, at its core Dianic witchcraft is: a pagan religion, women-focused Goddess worship that incorporates witchcraft into the practice.

From there it branches off into different traditions and even individual paths that can be a bit different.

Beginnings...

Wicca is a pagan religion that was introduced to the world in the 1950's by its founder Gerald Gardner. Wicca gave a major rebirth to modern paganism and witchcraft.

The Dianic tradition was founded in the 1970s developing from the Wiccan religion. Two people founded different Dianic paths at this time. Zsuzsanna Budapest & Morgan McFarland. McFarland went on to found the McFarland Dianic tradition which is mixed gender while Budapest founded the Dianic feminist tradition, which is women only, focused on women's mysteries and with a heavy influence of feminism and women's rights.

From there it is grown and there are quite a few smaller groups and solitary women who worship the Goddess and call themselves Dianic.

My own path is based off of Budapests' tradition but I do not consider it Wiccan. While it was heavily influenced by Wicca, its core set of beliefs, practices, and views are very different.

The Goddess Diana.

The namesake of our path is that of the Goddess Diana. You do not have to worship Diana or have Her be your main focus on the path, the Goddess is just our namesake.

:: NOTE :: The following information is based on my own feelings, thoughts, and beliefs on women's spirituality and the Goddess path. Please do not take these as written in stone or even the thought of every woman on this path. The Dianic path is not one size fits all. Each woman must discover it in her own way and shape it herself as she walks it.

What this is and should be is nothing more than a glimpse into my path and the path of others like myself. It is my hope to give those who are curious or interested some sort of general understanding and direction in where to begin their own search for wisdom. “We women embody the Goddess as Creatrix. Physically, we embody the power of the Goddess in Her capacity to create and sustain life. Our wombs are the living metaphor of Her creative potential and thus are the very source of our creative power”- Ruth Barrett Women’s Rites, Women’s Mysteries

The core tenets

The Dianic tradition at its core is a belief/worship of Goddess, the divine feminine.

  • The Dianic path is a women's mystery tradition inspired by Goddess-focused pagan religions, cultural practices, traditions, and mythology. Nature and magick-based.  With a feminist influence towards both ending and healing from the patriarchy.

  • Dianics acknowledge the Divine Goddess within ourselves, within nature, and within the flow of life. The view of Divine/Diety(s) can be different and unique to each priestess. We may embrace soft or hard polytheism. All Goddesses and pantheons can be embraced.

  • Dianics honor and celebrate the sacred cycles of life and nature in the changing of the seasons and phases of the moon. The Dianic seasonal celebrations are both Goddess and women's mystery-based, sharing our journey from Maiden to Crone and seeing how that is reflected in the ever-changing cycles of nature.

  • Dianic is a women's mystery tradition, honoring the sacred mysteries of women. We embrace the sacredness of our bodies, minds, and spirits, we honor and celebrate them. They are reflected in our magick, traditions, celebrations, and practice.

  • Dianics honor ourselves and women as sacred. We strive to end and to heal from patriarchy and oppression. We empower women, women's voices, creativity, magick, and spirit.
