Autumn Equinox
May occur September 21st-24th
“The September Equinox (or southward equinox) is the moment when the Sun appears to cross the celestial equator heading southward.” - Wikepedia
The Autumn Equinox marks the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The equinox holds a balance within the world, both a beginning and an end.
In such, it is dedicated to the Goddess Persephone, the dark maiden goddess. She is the daughter of Demeter, the Earth Mother Goddess, and the counterpart of Kore, the bright maiden goddess who returns in the spring. The autumn equinox marks the return of Persephone and her descent to the underworld as queen.
It is a time for inner reflection, insight, and inner growth. A time to acknowledge the darker aspects of ourselves and the power we hold. It is a good time for shadow work and exploring our deeper secrets.
As the wheel turns….
The autumn equinox is the second harvest festival, preceded by Lammas, which marks the cutting of grain and corn, and followed by Samhain, the third, which marks the culling of animals. The autumn equinox represents the harvest of fruits and berries. Apples playing a major role. As a harvest festival it graces us with abundance and thankfulness while reminding us of the sacrifice and scarcity to come. This is the hint of shadows before darkness arrives.
